DIY Star Topper Headband

Featured: Gold Starburst Tree Topper (1230820)
  • Star Tree Topper – We chose this Gold Starburst Topper (1230820)
  • Plain headband – We got one from the Dollar Store
  • Green velvet ribbon; wire-lined is useful but not necessary – Bronner’s item (1215972), no longer available. Alternatively, green fabric or felt scraps will work as well.
  • Clear monofilament fishing line
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  1. To begin, secure your tree topper to the headband. We first wedged the headband through the coil before securing it further with clear monofilament fishing line.
Using fishing line will make it easy to remove for later use with your tree.
  2. Next, using your velvet ribbon, felt or fabric, cut out small rectangles.
The gold backed, green velvet ribbon gave us the luxurious look we were hoping to match with this incredible tree topper!
  3. After you have your rectangle, fold the piece in half and bevel the edges so that one end becomes a pointed tip.
This is where the wire can be handy, as it will help you to “curl” the needles for added dimension.
  4. Finally, while still folded in half, cut slits from the open end.
It’s important to note that you do not want to cut all the way through. This will create the “needles”.

  5. Finally, glue your “pine branches” along the headband, layering them until you have your desired look.
