From Brain-Frozen — To A Fantastically-Frosty Party Game Idea!

The Brain Freeze …

Where Do Snowmen Go To Dance Animated Gif

This “Let’s Build A Snowman” party game idea came to me after a temporary brain-freeze, just in the flurry of time for our annual Christmas gathering!

As to be expected whenever you are entertaining a large group of friends or family, there will inevitably be a whole slew of preferences to be considered. For instance, some people may prefer brain games … yet others may prefer more minute-to-win-it type games. Also to be considered are the ages or physical limitations of possible party-goers. This Christmas, I was trying to think of a new game that we have never played that would accommodate our family ranging from ages 4-84.

Fantastically-Frosty Idea!

Finding inspiration in one of my favorite games from childhood, this fantastically-frosty snowman party game idea came to me!

To explain, when I was little we used to play a game with a simple die, bar of chocolate — which gets wrapped in plastic wrap (and sometimes even aluminum foil!), butter knife and lastly, a few winter accessories. For instance, a scarf, gloves, hat.

The goal of the game is to roll a 6 on the die. When you do, you rush to put on all the accessories, unwrap the scrumdiddlyumptious chocolate bar and cut a piece off to enjoy … AS FAST AS YOU CAN! Because meanwhile, everyone else is taking turns rolling the die with hopes of the very same thing. And if a 6 is rolled, your efforts are interrupted! (A flood of precious memories rolls in as I relive those sweet moments.)

So naturally, it occurred to me that a similar concept could be applied with a snowman!

One of the great qualities of this party game idea is that I was able to get just about everything from Dollar Tree the day before our get together! As a result, it comes together so quickly it’s almost magical!

Supplies Needed

  • Poster Board or Foam Core — I used poster board, however foam core would be most durable and easier in game play.
  • Colored Felt, Cardstock, or Construction Paper
  • Scarf or Felt Material
  • Velcro®
  • Scissors

How To Make Snowman Party Game Pieces

It’s important to note, you’ll need to make double of all the pieces below.

To start, cut 3 circles of varying sizes from a single piece of poster board or foam core.

I opted for imperfect, jagged circles — just like real snowballs.

Once you have your first set, you can use them as a template to duplicate from a second sheet of poster board or foam core board.

Next, you’ll need to cut any accessories from additional poster board or cardstock. (If using poster board, glue colored felt on top and trim excess away.) Remember to cut two matching sets. Additionally, if you choose to use poster board and felt as I did, maximize your resources by using the scrap pieces left over from cutting the snowman’s body. You should be able to get everything for one snowman from a single board! (Think of it like Tetris® on poster board!)

Here are some accessory suggestions to help get you started:

  • Carrot Nose
  • Top Hat
  • Varying sizes of “Coal” pieces
  • Twig Arms
  • Felt Scarf
  • Googly Eyes
  • “Corn Cob” Pipe

Next, you’ll want to attach Velcro® pieces to the backs of pieces that will need to be securely assembled.

Bundle Up Because … Baby It’s Cold Outside!

Initially I had planned to make a 2D scarf the same as all the other pieces. However, I was tickled red & green to see Dollar Tree had a felt scarf. All I needed to do was simply cut it in half. Boom. DONE!

It Takes Two!

Unlike the chocolate game, which had only a single bar of chocolate, this DIY Snowman party game features twin snowmen! Why? To race, of course!

How To Play “Let’s Build A Snowman”

What you’ll need:

  • Your two DIY Snowmen
  • Two Die (giant die are more fun so everyone can see.)

Tailor game play to coordinate with your crowd! For young kids, simply allow them to roll their respective die, and each time they get a 6, they can build their snowman by attaching a single piece. First one to finish, wins!

Inspired by Pin-The-Tail-On-The-Donkey, here’s an alternative if you wish to make game play a little more challenging (and humorous):

Grab a pair of blindfolds and partner up! One team member can roll the die. Each time they get a 6 they can tell their blindfolded teammate to assemble a piece to their snowman. Who wins?! First team to finish or most accurate? You decide!

You could be the one on your team who rolls the dice and your teammate could assemble the snowman.
