Making our DIY ugly Christmas beanie will, no doubt, unleash your creativity and embrace festive chaos! After all, your goal isn’t elegance, but to make an ugly Christmas beanie so over-the-top it turns heads at every party. Bonus points, surely, for any beanie that lights up or plays music!

Gather the Goods for Your DIY Ugly Christmas Beanie
First of all, you’ll want to start with a plain hat, preferably one with a wide brim. The wide brim, undoubtedly, will provide a perfect place to tuck a light-strand battery pack and mini record musical ornament. Also, you will want a mannequin head. This will allow you, accordingly, to attach items to the hat stretched just as it will be on your head.
Secondly, you will want a glue gun or needle with thread that matches the color of your beanie. In fact, you may want both a glue gun and needle with thread handy. Some of your decor, no doubt, will better attach to your beanie with glue. Other pieces will better attach with needle and thread.

Now you’ll want to select your beanie decor. Given that, we found these delightful items:
- 6 ft. red/blue/green glitter ball garland
- “Jingle Bell Rock” mini record musical ornament or “Santa Baby” mini record musical ornament
- miniature glass ball set of 12 ornaments
- battery-operated 15 multi LED light set (green cord, #1173678)*
- assorted Christmas glasses (#1246437)*
- (two) 10-inch red poinsettia (#1231697)*
*In brief, these items are available in-store or by contacting customer service at 800.361.6736 or customerservice@bronners.com.
Build Your DIY Ugly Christmas Beanie
Garland
To begin with, you should tuck the looped ends of the garland into the center back brim of the beanie. Then you can tack the first sets of tiny beads securely into place with needle and thread. (When stitching on the brim, you should run the needle only through the outer layer of the brim. As a result, the brim will be open to hold the musical ornament and light battery pack.)

Continue by tacking the garland to the outer layer of the beanie every three large beads on each side. You will do this twice on each side. At this point, the rest of the garland should hang down like a necklace in the front of the beanie.
Lights
Next you’ll want to attach the lights. After inserting batteries, you should tuck the battery pack into the back brim of the hat, just right of center. Again with needle and thread, tack the light string around the beanie as needed. All things considered, the 15 lights should circle round the beanie twice. The first time around you should stitch them along and through the bead garland. Then the second time around you should tack them above that. Be sure to remember when you are sewing along the brim to only tack through the first layer.

Mini Ornaments
Now you can tack the mini ornaments around the middle section of the beanie. In other words, don’t place the mini ornaments too high or they will be covered by the poinsettia toppers.

Musical Ornament
At this point, you can tuck the musical record ornament in the right or left front brim of the hat. Place it on whichever side is easier for you to start the music from.
Poinsettias
Lastly, you can remove the poinsettia heads from the stems. At this time, you should apply glue to three petals and their corresponding stems on the back side of one poinsettia. Now secure the back sides of the stems and leaves in an upright position to the top of the beanie. Repeat with the second poinsettia. Finally, you should glue together the back sides of two or three petals at the top of the poinsettias. To emphasize, you must be certain the front sides of the poinsettias are facing out and the back sides are facing in and glued.
