RUSSELL STREET BOOKS

Department 56 village artist Barbara Lund designed the Dickens’ Village piece “Russell Street Books” for debut in 2019. Hence, Bronner’s was one of only three retailers delighted to host Barbara for a signing of the limited edition piece before she retired at year’s end.

“Russell Street Books” reflects the architectural details and old-fashioned warmth of a Victorian England bookstore. Barbara’s father and retired village artist, the late Neilan Lund, originally brought the idea of Dickens’ Village to Department 56 in the mid-1980s. He taught Barbara the art of design when she joined the company just a few years later. In fact, “Russell Street Books” gets its name from the street the Lund family lived on for many years!

ENTER OUR DEPARTMENT 56 GIVEAWAY!

To enter to win our Department 56 giveaway, “Russell Street Books,” simply leave a comment at the end of this post. In your comment, name a book you are reading or planning to read this winter. We will accept entries (U.S. only) through January 27. Then we’ll randomly select a winner and announce it here and on our other social media channels January 28. (See complete rules below.) Good luck to all! This is a great village piece to display throughout the winter months and is signed by Barbara Lund!

D56 DICKENS’ VILLAGE DECORATING IDEAS

In fact, Department 56’s Dickens’ Village lends itself to display not only at Christmas but all winter long. Department 56 village pieces on display bring light and warmth to your home during a cold and dark time of year.

lighted Dickens' Village "Old Curiosity Shop" set atop books on top of bookcase in the dark

Not to mention, your village display doesn’t have to break the bank. Even one village building in a thoughtful tabletop display catches your eye and warms your heart.

For example, I set up a simple 4-piece Dickens’ Village display atop our bookcase each fall. It’s on display through Christmas and all winter long. Undeniably, this village endears itself to lovers of literary works, especially those of Charles Dickens. So it seems so appropriate at our house that our limited display graces our bookcase.

Department 56 Bookshelf Village Display Idea

The love my girls and I share for literature and old-world charm was evidenced by many bookstore shops and library stops on our tour through Europe. You can follow our “Libka Girls Take Europe” series to follow the fun.

DICKENS’ VILLAGE FOR YOUR KITCHEN

Battery operated LED lighting alternative for some Department 56 village houses.

In the event you’re looking for something for your kitchen or dining room tabletop, Department 56 has a piece for you. A single piece from the collection with accents is all you need. I chose to showcase: “Joseph Edward Tea Shoppe” and “Holy Family Church.”

Department 56 lights its buildings a few different ways. “Joseph Edward Tea Shoppe” is lit with a removable electric cord and bulb. In this case, you can simply replace the cord and bulb with a battery-operated string of 16 white lights. That way you have no cord running from your kitchen or dining room table to a wall outlet!

However, I needed to come up with a clever way to hide the battery pack and excess cord. A complementary white and gold mug came to the rescue! In addition, it elevated the building.

“Holy Family Church” comes with a built-in LED light and cord. However, it can be displayed cordless with battery-operated candles, etc.

Love D56 year-round?! If so, you may enjoy these other posts sharing home decorating ideas for seasoned or new Department 56 collectors:

I am currently reading Breakfast at Sally’s: One Homeless Man’s Inspirational Journey. It’s a memoir by Richard LeMieux. My mom started me on my Dickens Village when I was a teen. She would give me a different piece every year for Christmas, and now I display my village from fall through winter. This Christmas I bought my 12-year-old daughter her first Dickens piece to begin building her collection.

I am an addicted-to-books junkie and retired teacher/administrator! Can’t pass a good bookstore and not ‘contribute’ to their revenue! Have a tradition for our five grandchildren’s birthdays of buying a book, related to their chosen birthday theme, and inviting all their guests to sign the book; a little memory that will follow them for life! Currently, I have 3 books going: Charles Krauthammer’s, The Point of It All, Brian Kilmeades’ new book, Sam Houston and the Alamo Avengers, and a mystery by Donna Andrews, Gone Gull.
Love Bronners, even though I’m a couple 1000 mi. away in So. TX! So, thank you for having both a great blog and a great website!!!

I really enjoyed watching the interview of Barbara Lund, and learning the history of Dept. 56 Dickens, and her career. Wishing her all the best in retirement! This winter I’m enjoying reading a couple of Janet Evanovich books, The Chase and Twisted Twenty-Six. My mother always displays her Dickens’ Village and Snow Village each Christmas, collections which she started over 30 years ago. I have a few Dickens’ Village pieces that I’m now inspired to find ways to display individually, or in small groups, during wintertime. Thank you for the suggestion.

For me reading has become a favorite pastime. I barely finish the last page of one book, when I find myself reading the first page of the next book.
If there is no next book, I will reread ones that I have, some as many as three times. Thus, I would have to agree with Thomas Jefferson when he said:
“I cannot live without book.” The ” Russell Street Books” would look great in my growing library.

I started Department 56’s Dickens Village when my now grown children were young & just in elementary school We bought a new house every year & putting the village together became a full day family’s activity. We are lucky enough to have a wonderful theatre in the next town to us and, we took them every year to see “ A Christmas Carol”. The kids would ask for a friend or two to come over most years to see it being it together. From the green felt on the top of our cabinet t the “snow” and, al the characters it was a wonderful tradition. My son now has the entire collection (16 houses)at his home. He & his wife put the village up for Thanksgiving and it looks just as beautiful in his home as it did in ours when he was a 10 year of boy. He is so proud to have this family
tradition continue at his home. Department 56 has been a part of our Christmas for close to 30 years!
Now, as far as the book I’m currently reading, I’m actually reading two. I am rereading The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. I read this book for the first time about 20 years ago and find myself rereading it often. It’s a captivating book with stories about a missionaries family life in The Congo In the 1950’s.
The second book I am currently reading is titled “Mastering the Art of Pasta”. I am just starting to make fresh pasta and received many pasta making tools & this amazing book for Christmas. I’ve gotten some pasta made but, need to perfect my process.

It’s summer here in Australia, and I am reading through the longlist for our book club – at the moment, it’s In Cold Blood, not particularly Dickensian. But! When it’s winter, we will be doing A Tale of Two Cities!

I’ve been collecting the Dicken’s series for years. Christmas finds them shining under our tree, adorning my Great-Grandma’s table and atop our kitchen peninsula. Christmas also finds every branch of our tree sporting a Bronners’ ornament, or two, or three, or…what can I say, I love the season! I’m reading “What a Wonderful World” by Marcus Chown and have discovered that it is indeed a remarkable and wonderful world we live in.

Post Season’s Greetings and Hope all have a safe, sane, happy, healthy, successful, prosperous NEW YEAR! That having been said, would love the entire collection of these fantastic pieces for any Christmas display. As for reading – besides the usual Civil War Times. Civil War Illustrated, Food and Wine, National Geographic and National Geographic History, Cook’s, Cook’s Illustrated, Bibliographical, American Archaeology, Archaeology, books from Library Thing.com, and Library of America offerings I am also reading current and about to finish The Crown of Content the third in the series of The Becket Chronicles by Jason Grunewald who is the brother of a good friends and a budding author. Medieval in time and a well written period piece. Good reading if you enjoy historical novels.

I just finished reading “The Polar Bears Quartered in Hell”, the story of the men who fought in Archangel, Russia during WWI. My grandfather was part of that war. Michigan’s Own has a section dedicated to those Michigan men who served there and there is a monument dedicated to the Michigan Polar Bears at White Chapel Cemetery in Holly, MI., for anyone interested in Michigan’s military history.

OMG. I need to add these houses to my collection. My family and I try to add at least one house to our villages every year. We try to find things that have a slight connection to our family. My brother’s name is Joseph Edward ( not sure if he drinks tea but..) My parents were married in Holy Family Church. The bookstore looks awesome, and would love to win it for our village. My daughter is actually the reader in the family. I do however read the classics, just finished “The Christmas Carol”, a holiday “must”. I’m not sure what I’ll be reading next but it will probably garden books. I plan on planting several gardens that will go along with the time period of my house that was built in 1826. So I need to do research on popular plants from back then.

Bronner’s has been a staple in my Christmas ornaments ever since my daughter was baptized and received a baptismal ornament from her godparents. The bins I use to store my ornaments are loaded with the original Bronner’s boxes, holding each ornament closely, waiting for their next appearance on our trees.
Likewise, Department 56 has its own special place in our Christmas decor. Our village is 100% Department 56 – no themes, but a “diverse” community, both in time and occasion.

Being that I am a writer and I have started work on my 6th Novel, which will be a horror book, thought I would choose a book(s) to help inspire me. So, thought I would read “The Institute” by my favorite author Stephen King or “NOS4A2” by Joe Hill whom I’ve recently been introduced to. Both should fit the bill quite nicely.
